How it works
Drop the WAV on the page. Your browser reads the PCM audio, this page resamples or mixes it if you asked for that, and an MP3 encoder running in a background thread writes the file. The result is saved from your own device.
Choose the bitrate
320 kbps is the best MP3 can do and the right choice for a master you will share with musicians or upload to a platform that accepts MP3. 192 kbps is transparent for most listeners and half the size. 128 kbps suits speech and demos. A 4-minute track is about 10 MB at 320 kbps, 6 MB at 192 kbps and 4 MB at 128 kbps.
Sample rate and channels
The MP3 keeps the WAV's sample rate by default. MP3 stops at 48000 Hz, so a 88200 Hz or 96000 Hz WAV is resampled to 48000 Hz; pick 44100 Hz if the file is going to a CD-based workflow. Mono halves the size for voice recordings; a stereo WAV stays stereo unless you mix it down.
Keep the WAV
MP3 is for sharing and listening. Keep the WAV as the master, because the detail MP3 removes cannot be recovered from the MP3 later. If you still need to master the track, do that on the WAV first and convert the finished master.

A taal is a repeating rhythmic cycle: count 16 beats for teentaal, eight for keherwa, and six for dadra. For teentaal, clap on 1, 5 and 13, wave on 9; for keherwa, clap on 1, wave on 5; for dadra, clap on 1, wave on 4.
Rupak: the 7-beat taal that starts on khali
Rupak is a taal, or repeating rhythmic cycle, with seven beats grouped 3 + 2 + 2. Its opening closed strokes make sam, the first beat, sound light; this beat is khali, marked by a wave, rather than tali, marked by a clap.
Keherwa: the 8-beat taal of film songs, bhajans and folk
Keherwa is an eight-beat taal, or repeating rhythmic cycle, arranged as 4 + 4. To recognise it, listen for two groups of four, a lighter second half, and the recurring drum pattern: dha ge na ti | na ka dhin na.
Jhaptaal: the 10-beat taal
Jhaptaal is a taal, a repeating rhythmic cycle, with ten beats. Its four vibhags, or divisions, follow 2 + 3 + 2 + 3, alternating two-beat and three-beat groups.
Ektaal: the 12-beat taal of khayal
Ektaal is a twelve-beat taal, or repeating rhythmic cycle, divided into six two-beat sections called vibhags. Its stretched beats let the tabla player elaborate the stroke pattern in vilambit (slow-tempo) bada khayal, the slow opening composition of a khayal performance.
Questions people ask
Which MP3 bitrate should I use for music when converting from WAV?
320 kbps if size does not matter, 192 kbps as a good everyday choice. Below 128 kbps the loss becomes audible on music, though speech is fine at 64 to 96 kbps.
Does the WAV to MP3 converter accept a 24-bit WAV?
Yes. 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit float WAV files all convert; the bit depth is not part of an MP3, only the sample rate and bitrate are.
Why does the WAV to MP3 converter not offer 96000 Hz?
The MP3 format goes up to 48000 Hz. A 96000 Hz WAV is resampled to 48000 Hz, which is above what any MP3 bitrate can carry anyway.
